IMPACT OF RENAL INSUFFICIENCY ON FLUORIDE METABOLISM

Abstract

Renal insufficiency brings about cumulation of fluoride in bone mineral and joints. Healthy subjects excrete 50% of fluoride intaken through renal excretion. The latter can fall as low as 6% in chronically renal insuficient patients. Often, the latter exhibit polydipsia (secondary to polyuria) which increases water intake (and fluoride exposition). In countries where fluorosis is endemic (e.g.: India) the use of distilled water is advocated for hydration or dyalisis of renal insufficient patients.
