Olav Bijvoet. The discoverer of bisphosphonates

Abstract

In memory of Prof. Olav Bijvoet, who passed away last July, we hereby recall his main contributions to the understanding of the therapeutic value of bisphosphonates. Olav grasped early the interrelation between bone cells and its modulation with a bisphosphonate in order to treat different bone diseases. Pamidronate and olpadronate where two products emerging from his concepts.
