Abstract

A patient who develops hypoparathyroidism during her sixth decade of life is reported. It was detected due to spontaneous carpopedal spasms. Low calcium (6.1 mg/dl) and PTH (8 pg/ml) levels confirmed the diagnosis. She had not undergone neck surgery or irradiation. There was no relevant family history. Throughout the 11 years follow up she presented association of other pathologies that allow the suspicion of autoimmune etiology of hypoparathyroidism: candidiasis of skin and nails, autoimmune thyroiditis, pemphigoid and psoriasis. She eventually died of complicated community-acquired pneumonia.
